Beginning with the code-named 993 series in 1993, the 911 had noticeably softer body lines, more rounded fenders, sloping oval headlights, a sliding rear spoiler, and a widened rear of the car. The 993 series was the last to feature an air-cooled six-cylinder engine.
Beginning with the codename 996 series in 1997. For the first time, Porsche is equipped with a water-cooled six-cylinder engine in batches. The change was made to comply with exhaust emission standards mandated globally.
